1. Appearance

2. Power on/off
- Power on: long press Power/Sleep button for 2 sec and release, the device will boot showing a booting screen. [Note: if prompt “The battery is too low, please charge”, please refer to 12. Charging; if black screen with no respond, please refer to 13. Malfunctions & Solutions.
- Power off: when the screen is lit up, long press Power/Sleep button for 2 sec, the device will shut down showing “Shutting down”.
- Sleep: when the screen is lit up, press Power/Sleep button to send the device to sleep mode.
- Wake: when in sleep mode, press Power/Sleep button to wake the device to get it ready for use. [NOTE: woken up, the device will go back to the Online Translation screen.]
3. Connection (Wi-Fi Setup)
- Search for Wi-Fi
- Light up the screen, swipe to the right to enter Utilities screen.
- Click Wi-Fi Setup to start searching for available Wi-Fi hotspot(s). If you do not find the Wi-Fi you want to connect to, click Search for More at the bottom of the list.
- Connect to Wi-Fi
- Select the name of the Wi-Fi that you want to connect the device to.
- Click on the blank box to type in the password (Refer to Keypad below for how to use the keypad to type in the password.)
- Click Enter on the keypad after you are finished with the password.
- Click OK. If connected, the device will go back to the Online Translation screen with a Wi-Fi icon lit up on the top-left corner.
- Keypad: to make the buttons big enough, we have a split design on the keypad.
- We divide the 26 letters into 2 groups, from A to M and from N to Z. Click on the A-M or N-Z button on the right to toggle in between.
- The toggle button is also used to toggle between uppercase and lowercase.
- Digits and punctuation can be found when hitting on the third toggle button, which lies on top of Delete.
- The third toggle button can also be used to toggle between different punctuation pages.
4. Online Translation
- This function requires an active connection to the internet.
- This function is realized on the Online Translation screen, i.e. the main screen.
- There are two hard buttons on the front of the device. The Upper button (with bumps on) is for Chinese, the lower one (with no bumps) for the language selected.
- Press and hold the Upper button, you will hear a “beep”, and after that you start talking in Chinese. Once finished, release the button, the device will translate your words into the language selected and play the sound automatically.
- Press and hold the Lower button, start talking in the language selected after the “beep”. Once finished, release the button, the device will translate the words back into Chinese and play the sound automatically.
- Once you are done speaking, the transcription will be shown on the screen. By reading the transcription, you can check if the speech transcription result is correct. (In general, the translation would not be accurate unless the transcription is correct.)
- If you find the words shown are mis-transcribed or not what you meant to say, you can press either Upper/Lower button to cancel the translation or sound.
- Click on the Speaker icon on the screen to re-play the sound.
- If the environment is too noisy that the sound is inaudible or intelligible, you can share the screen with the other end of communication (make sure the transcription is correct).
- Please be aware that the microphone lies on top of the device (no at the bottom as is the case with most smartphones). Please talk towards the microphone for better recognition.
5. Language Settings
- On top of the main screen, the left bar is set to Chinese and cannot be changed, the right bar is set to English (Chinese English) by default and can be changed.
- Click on the right bar to go to the Language List, in which there are currently 24 languages to choose from.
- Click on the name to set it to the language to translate from/to. Clicking on a name with a rightwards triangle brings you to a secondary menu where the language is further divided into different accent variants. (Chinese English is recommended for practicing English.)
- In the language list, two icons are found in front of the languages names. The Microphone icon indicates that the device can understand the language as an input. The Speaker icon indicates that the device can “speak” the language by playing the sound.

7. Volume Adjustment
- Light up the screen, swipe to the left to enter the Utilities screen.
- Click Sounds to enter the Volume Adjustment screen.
- Click the green “+” or “−” to adjust the volume of the alerts.
- Click the orange “+” or “−” to adjust the volume of the translation voice.
8. Screen Timeout & Voice Rate
- Light up the screen, swipe to the left to enter the Utilities screen.
- Click Settings to enter the Settings screen.
- Click the green “+” or “−” to adjust the Screen Timeout, from 30 sec to 5 min. Click on one of the three orange buttons to set the rate of playing sound to Slow, Mid or Fast. [Note: this only affects the Online Translation, not available for Offline Expressions]
9. Firmware Update
- This function requires an active connection to the internet.
- Once the device is powered on, if a new version is found, a notification will be showing. To manually check for update, swipe to the right to enter the Utilities screen.
- Swipe up to locate the Update icon, click on it to check for new version. If a new version is found, click Update to start updating.
- Before the update, please make sure the battery is charged and the device is connected to the internet.
- During the update, please do not touch the screen or press any buttons.
- After the updating package finishes downloading, click OK to proceed. The device will reboot afterwards.
- There will be some installation going on after the rebooting. Wait with patience as the progress bar fills up (Do not touch the screen or press any buttons).
- The device will boot once it finishes updating.
10. Version Information
- Light up the screen, swipe to the left to enter the Utilities screen.
- Swipe up to find the About icon.
- Click About for information about the version and the like.
11. Offline Expressions
- Select the language: refer to 5. Language Settings to set up the language.
- Light up the screen, swipe to the left twice to enter the Offline Expressions screen.
- The expressions are classified into categories based on scenes. Swipe up and down to check all the categories. Click any of them to go to a sub-categories list.
- Click on a sub-category for specific expressions. Swipe up and down to locate the expression you want to say.
- Click on the expression, the device will “say” the expression in the language selected.
12. Charging
- Charged when powered on, the animated battery icon on the top-right corner of the screen will indicate that the device is being charged and how much the charge remaining.
- Charged when powered off, the screen will show the status of charging and the current percentage of charge.
- The screen will keep on when charged powered off.
- Power/Sleep button will not work in this situation. Remove the cord and you can long press the button to power it back on.
13. Malfunctions & Solutions
- Crash/freeze: long press Power/Sleep button for 10 sec to force the device to shut down.
- Unable to boot
- Long press Power/Sleep button for 10 sec and try again.
- Charge the device for a while and try again.
